I Tested Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Which is Better?

I tested the free web app versions of Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity on writing a blog article about the ongoing Google Gemini Api Developers competition using a common prompt and without proving the link URL for the announcement. I was awed by the results.

1.     Introduction:

Generative AI represents a transformative leap in technology, empowering machines to create content autonomously by learning patterns from vast datasets. This cutting-edge field harnesses deep learning algorithms to generate text, images, music, and more, mimicking human creativity. From generating realistic art to composing music and even crafting human-like conversation, generative AI pushes the boundaries of what machines can achieve independently. As we delve into its capabilities and implications, we uncover a future where AI not only assists but also collaborates in the creative process, revolutionizing industries from art and entertainment to healthcare and beyond.

I presume that everyone already knows what AI or Artificial Intelligence is all about but in case the reader is not familiar with the topic, below is a comprehensive introduction.

Four of the most popular generative AI apps that uses Large Language model are Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.

Claude:

Claude is a large language model developed by Anthropic, designed to excel in natural language processing tasks. The latest iteration, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, has been noted for its enhanced performance and speed compared to its predecessors. Claude models are built on generative pre-trained transformers, allowing them to predict the next word in a sequence effectively. They are particularly recognized for their ability to handle complex prompts and provide coherent and contextually relevant responses. Claude’s architecture supports a larger context window, enabling it to analyze extensive documents and provide detailed feedback, making it suitable for users needing in-depth insights from lengthy texts. Claude can’t access and search the internet.

Gemini:

Gemini, developed by Google, features a free version called Gemini Flash, which provides fast response times and enhanced reasoning capabilities. Users can engage in text-based prompts, upload images, and search Google services, all while benefiting from a quadrupled context window for longer conversations. The paid version, Gemini Advanced, utilizes the powerful Ultra 1.0 model, offering advanced coding assistance and personalized feedback, making it ideal for professionals and students requiring in-depth support. Together, these versions cater to a wide range of users, from casual seekers of information to those needing sophisticated AI tools. Gemini can’t access and search the internet.

ChatGPT:

ChatGPT, created by OpenAI, is one of the most widely recognized AI language models. It is built on the GPT-4 architecture and is known for its versatility in generating text across various domains, including content creation, summarization, and translation. ChatGPT offers integration capabilities through its API, allowing developers to embed its functionalities into third-party applications. While it excels in generating specific and varied content, it is also noted for requiring significant editing to refine its outputs. The model’s ability to handle diverse tasks makes it a popular choice for users looking for a comprehensive AI assistant. ChatGPT can access and search the internet.

Perplexity:

Perplexity is an AI-powered search assistant that leverages advanced language processing to provide concise and accurate responses to user queries. It is designed to assist users in finding information quickly and efficiently, drawing from a wide range of sources to ensure the reliability of its answers. Perplexity’s unique approach focuses on delivering high-quality, contextually relevant information while maintaining an unbiased tone. This makes it a valuable tool for users seeking clarity and precision in their search for knowledge. Perplexity can access and search the internet.

2.     Testing the AI Apps

I used a common prompt to see and compare how the apps gather, analyze, and condense data in a form of a simply written and concise blog article. It is interesting to note that each Ai wrote it’s version of the article using distinctive style that  is not the same as the others meaning, each article is unique and not an exact copy of another.

Common prompt:

Write an engaging blog about Google Gemini API app development competition that ends on August 12. Style the blog article’s structure to be simple and concise. Mention the requirements, the type of apps, and the prizes for the winning entries.

My Personal Response Analysis and Comparison:

After reading and analyzing the accuracy of the responses, the following are my comparative analysis results:

  • Claude, despite having access to the internet, wrote a very short article that lacks in depth and exhibited a very basic grasp of the subject matter. The listed figures for the prices are also not accurate.
  • Gemini, the main “character” of the competition did well in writing a simple, concise, catchy, and engaging article that has accurately captured the essence of the main subject matter. What de we expect? It literally wrote the article in a condensed form, but not too short and without details such the figures for the prizes compared to Claude. It compensated for the lack of details by providing a link URL for more information.
  • ChatGPT’s writing style and article structure is somewhat similar to Gemini, albeit the difference on how the paragraphs were written. It also used catchy headlines and call to action, a proven writing strategy to capture and engage the readers. It has accurately captured the essence of the main subject matter similar to Gemini. Despite having internet search capabilities, it didn’t go much into detail and didn’t provide a link URL for more information.
  • Perplexity, on the other hand wrote the most accurate article about the subject matter. Though the article it has written is longer than what was written by the previously mentioned Ai apps, still can be considered simple and concise but has more depth and detail compared to the others. The gathered and listed requirements, type of apps, and figures for the prizes are very accurate. It has also provided citations and link URLs for more information. No wonder, it has inherent internet search capabilities.

3.     My Conclusion

And the winner is: Perplexity

After carefully assessing the information gathering, churning, condensing, and writing capabilities of the Generative AI apps that I tested based on the criteria that I set in the common prompt. I infer that Perplexity is the best performer. It’s response beat the competitors by providing accurate information, more details, and also citation of sources through URLs if the reader wants to dig deeper for more information.

Stay tuned for my next article. I also tested Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, and perplexity to do a comparative analysis of the responses and decide which one is the winner. You will be surprised by the results.
